TO: The Luther College Community
FROM: David L. Tiede, Interim President
It is a privilege, indeed a blessing, to be at Luther College. I began serving as interim president July 1 and I am already impressed with how well the college is managed and the strong position in which President Rick and Mrs. Judy Torgerson left Luther. Interaction with the Weston Noble Alumni Choir last week gave me a glimpse of the overwhelming affection alumni, parents and friends have for this place. I had heard about it far and wide. What a delight to experience it!
As the transitions of this interim presidency unfold, the search for Luther's 10th president continues. Work this summer has focused on candidate identification. The search will be broad, but also targeted. The committee will be seeking out strong leaders who may not even be looking for the wonderful leadership opportunity Luther College provides. The committee continues to welcome nominations. They can be sent to search consultant Dr. Bruce Alton, [email protected].
There is no set timeline as the committee wants to take the time it needs. I was as surprised as anyone that Luther needed this interim. Now we are taking delight and advantage of the moment, confident that the search will reach a successful conclusion. One of my important tasks over the next few months is to work with faculty, staff, students, and Regents to prepare for an October workshop with the Board and presidential search committee. The workshop will seek to develop a shared vision of the leadership Luther will welcome from its tenth president as the college moves into the dynamic (some experts say "disruptive") future of higher education. Luther College has a wonderful calling with remarkable capacities to provide "transformational experiences that connect faith with learning, freedom with responsibility, and life's work with service." The challenges ahead are both daunting and promising. The best is yet to be!
