Kim Powell has been a professor in the Communication Studies department since 1992. Her areas of specialization include rhetoric, argumentation, and public address. Some of her course topics include Public Address, Argumentation, Intercultural Communication, Public Relations, Persuasion, and Research Methods.
Professor Powell serves as the Department Head of Communication Studies and directs the Speech & Debate Center.
Professor Powell was a Fulbright Scholar to the United Arab Emirates in 2006-2007 and has since returned with groups of students for study abroad courses. Powell led Luther's Malta and the Mediterranean program in Spring 2017. In Decorah, she designed and headed the successful capital campaign to build an animal shelter. Powell served as President of the Humane Society of Northeast Iowa until 2016 and currently is a volunteer working with media for the organization. She is Past President of the Iowa Communication Association.
