SUMMARY:Partisan Politics and Public Health: Lessons Learned with Vaccine Developer Dr. Thomas Verstraeten
DESCRIPTION:At a time in the United States when the field of public health is becoming increasingly more partisan\, what can we learn from other countries around the world to stabilize public trust in public health officials? Luther student\, Maci Doty ‘26\, is joined by Dr. Thomas Verstraeten to discuss the politics of public health\, specifically vaccinations\, in Europe. Dr. Verstraeten is the founder of a Belgium-based infectious disease and vaccine research company\, P95. Utilizing hubs around the world\, P95 works alongside the World Health Organization\, Pfizer\, and other global organizations to develop and research vaccines. Dr. Verstraeten brings a unique perspective to the conversation; straddling both private and public sectors in public health\, he is well-positioned to share insights that may benefit partisan states like the United States. Dr. Verstraeten and Ms. Doty will discuss political debates and topics that surround vaccination in Europe as compared to the US\, and the role of governments in shaping public opinion. \nThis discussion will take place over Zoom with a viewing in Hovde Lounge.

SUMMARY:Guest Talk: Building Community and Spotting Chameleons - Experiencing rural Madagascar as a Peace Corps Volunteer
DESCRIPTION:Join Returned Peace Corps Volunteer and Luther alum Becca Buse ’19 for a talk encapsulating their experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Madagascar 2023-25\, followed by lunch in the Luther Cafeteria. \nMadagascar is the fourth largest island on earth and extremely biodiverse—famous for lemurs\, chameleons\, and baobab trees. Madagascar also faces poverty\, lack of infrastructure (11% paved roads)\, and inconsistent access to water and electricity. As a Peace Corps Volunteer\, Becca focused on three areas of community building: training local farmers to increase sustainable agriculture practices\, co-teaching mothers to improve nutrition\, and educating community members to protect the local Tapia forest environment. While all Peace Corps experiences abroad are unique to each volunteer\, Becca will also have time to answer general questions about applying to the peace corps\, different types of service\, and living abroad. Additionally\, Becca has been selected as a Rotary Peace Fellow and will begin a master’s in Peace and Conflict Studies (MPaC) at the University of Queensland\, Brisbane Australia in February of 2026. At the end of the talk you will get a chance to spot a chameleon. It isn’t as easy as you’d think! \n*People joining for lunch will need to pay for their own cafeteria entry.

SUMMARY:Senior Presentation: Crossing Borders: From Timor-Leste to a Post-Brexit World
DESCRIPTION:This presentation follows a personal and global journey from Timor-Leste to the United Kingdom\, exploring how one of the world’s youngest nations connects to one of Europe’s most defining political moments — Brexit. Through stories\, observations\, and research on immigration\, economics\, and identity\, Jose Eliano reflects on how Brexit affected Timorese communities living and working in the UK through Portuguese citizenship. The talk invites audiences to consider how global decisions can shape opportunities\, belonging\, and the movement of people — even in places as distant as Timor-Leste. \nOpen to students\, faculty\, and community members interested in global affairs\, migration\, and the experiences of Timorese people abroad. Sponsored by the International Studies Department.
