All Luther College students interested in performing in the Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Band, or combos for the 2017-2018 school year are invited to audition on Monday, August 28 and Tuesday, August 29.
Big band auditions will consist of prepared jazz excerpts, a sight-reading example, and improvisation on a jazz standard or blues tune. All excerpts can be downloaded from this page.
Saxophonists should also prepare a solo transcription of your choice and the doubling excerpts on clarinet and flute. The first round of saxophone auditions will take place on Monday, August 28 with Professor Lynne Hart in Jenson-Nobel studio 195.
Sign-up time sheets and hard copy excerpts will be posted on the Jenson-Noble studio 163 bulletin board.
Details about the audition requirements and procedures are included with the prepared excerpts.
Students interested in performing with a combo only, should still sign up for an audition time, but do not need to prepare the audition excerpts. Instead, be ready to play the melody and improvise on two jazz standards in contrasting styles. If you hope to participate in a combo, but have never studied jazz before, prepare a piece in any style that demonstrates your musical ability (e.g. classical, funk, blues). Players of all experience levels are encouraged to participate! Based on the auditions, Jon Ailabouni and Tony Guzman will make recommendations for combo configurations. Final groups will be formed by the participants in the first two weeks of class.
A jam session will take place on Thursday, August 31 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Sperati Band Room for everyone interested in combos to meet and play together.
If you are interested in learning to improvise, consider signing up for jazz improvisation lessons (MUS-130, Ailabouni) or the Principles of Improvisation course (spring semester).
Looking forward to making good music with you all this year!
