Orchestra Auditions

General information for ALL students with interest in orchestra:

Audition schedule sign-ups will be posted on the Orchestra Room door - audition dates are below:

  • Orchestra placement auditions for first-year string players will take place on Tuesday, September 1 between 3-6 pm in the Orchestra Room.
  • Orchestra placement auditions for sophomore, junior and senior string players will take place September 30 through October 4.
  • Orchestra placement auditions for ALL winds, brasses, and percussionists will take place September 30 through October 4.

Full rehearsals will begin the first week of October. During fall semester, all music ensembles will rehearse weekdays between 4 and 9 PM. Detailed rehearsal schedules TBA. 


Special information for string players:

  1. Download the info letter for first-year string players.
  2. Download audition excerpts for: Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass
  3. Special note for violinists: There are four (4) excerpts included in the PDF.  The first excerpt (Tchaikovsky) is required.  Each violinist should also prepare two of the three remaining excerpts (Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius).

String players who plan to audition for Symphony Orchestra should prepare one minute of a solo piece in addition to orchestral excerpts.

String players who plan to audition for Philharmonia should simply prepare a solo of your choice, 3-4 minutes in length. No excerpts required for Philharmonia.  



Special information for wind, brass, and percussion players:

Wind, brass, and percussion players who plan to audition for Symphony Orchestra and/or Chamber Orchestra should prepare the audition excerpts. No other music is required for the audition--no solo, no sight reading.  Just excerpts.
