Many thanks to all who participated in the 2018 Dorian Choral Retreat! Over 200 singers from throughout the country spent a weekend in song and fellowship. Watch this page for information about future events.
What is the Dorian Choral Retreat? A weekend of choral music on the campus of beautiful Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Each year at Luther, the Dorian Festivals feature the areas of keyboard, choral, vocal, band, orchestra, jazz band, and summer camps for middle and high school youth. This year, we are pleased to offer the inaugural Dorian Choral Retreat for adults.
Who can attend the Dorian Choral Retreat? Anyone! You don’t have to be an alumnus of or even familiar with Luther College. You are welcome to attend if you are a career musician, an educator, or even if you just love singing. Because this is designed to be an event for adults, we require that participants be age 19 or over.
Who will lead the Dorian Choral Retreat? The primary conductor for the choir will be Dr. Andrew Last ‘97, director of the Luther College Nordic Choir. Other Luther College choral faculty (Dr. Jennaya Robison ‘96, Dr. Jill Wilson, and Mark Potvin ‘01) will assist with rehearsals and will present breakout sessions. Luther alumnus Karen Brunssen ‘75 will offer a breakout session, and conductor, composer, church musician, organist, and teacher Tom Trenney will join us to share his expertise and inspiration throughout the weekend.
What do I need to do in preparation for the weekend? For logistical reasons, please let us know if you require special housing or dietary accommodations. Musically, there is no need to learn the repertoire in advance. You’ll receive a music packet during registration, and the weekend will offer ample rehearsal time to become familiar with the repertoire.
What does it cost to attend to the Dorian Choral Retreat? Costs are dependent on your housing preference. You may choose to stay in the Luther College dorms or you may find your own housing option off campus. Visit the retreat fees page to learn more about costs for participating in the weekend, and how to register non-participant guests.
