Joshua Palkki to give guest lecture

DECORAH, Iowa; Guest lecturer Joshua Palkki will address how gender stereotypes appear in choral classrooms as well as musical and social issues involving LGBTQ students in ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Valders room 206 on the Luther College campus.

The lecture, "Creating Safe Space in the Music Classroom," is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Palkki is a member of the faculty of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach, where he leads the University Choir, teaches courses in music education (including choral repertoire and pedagogy), interfaces with the College of Education and mentors graduate students in music education. Palkki is passionate about teacher education and preparing preservice teachers to be competent and caring teachers with the knowledge and skills to address issues of social justice through music education.

Palkki's writing appears in the Choral Journal, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Journal of Research in Music Education, Research and Issues in Music Education and Research Studies in Music Education. Palkki currently serves on the editorial board for two journals: TOPICS and New Directions in Music Education. Dr. Palkki's presentation will address ways in which gender stereotypes present themselves in the choral classroom, as well as pedagogical, musical and social issues involved with honoring LGBTQA students in ensembles.
