Friday Music Showcase Concert: Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra

The Luther College Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform together for a Music Showcase, part of Luther's Commencement weekend events, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.

The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Joan deAlbuquerque, director of bands and associate professor of music, directs the Concert Band and Juan Tony Guzmán, associate professor of music and director of the jazz program, directs the Jazz Orchestra.

Concert Band will perform the four movements of "Paris Sketches" by Martin Ellerby; "Irish Tune from County Derry" by Percy A. Grainger; "Masque" by Kenneth Hesketh; "Who Puts His Trust in God Most Just" by Bach, arranged by James Croft; and "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa.

Jazz Orchestra will perform "Song of Bilbao" by Pat Metheny, arranged by Alan Baylock; "Teach Me Tonight" with words by Sammy Cahn, music by Gene DePaul and arranged by Sammy Nestico; "Chinoiserie" by Duke Ellington, transcribed and edited by David Berger; and "Cherokee" by Ray Noble, arranged by Gary Lindsay.

The concert will also feature Vocal Jazz, performing "Danny Boy" arranged by Don Sebesky and "Partido Blue" by Michael Phillip Mossman. Composed of 13 vocal students, this student-led ensemble performs at a variety of concerts and events throughout the academic year.
