Guest Recital: Tara Meade `08, flute

  • Date: Saturday, September 28, 2019
  • Time: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
  • Location: Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music

St. Paul, Minnesota-based musicians and educators Tara Meade and Yvonne Knoepfel will present a Guest Artist Recital featuring relatively unknown flute works by female composers. This recital will be the first public performance in Ms. Meade’s more than year-long quest to promote acceptance and diversity through music instruction and performance. In addition to featuring works by living Russian, Canadian, and African-American female composers, recital selections will also highlight musical influences outside the western tradition. Katherine Hoover's Winter Spirits is a piece highly influenced by Native American music and inspired by a Maria Buchfink painting depicting “a Native American flute player; from the flute rises a cloud of kachinas and totem spirits.” Allison Loggins-Hull's Pray for flute and electronics combines an improvisational flute line with an electronic track composed of sounds of worship from various faith traditions, such as organs, whispers, and chants. The recital will also present works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Heather Schmidt, Lili Boulanger, and Mel Bonis. Both performers will bring strong Luther connections to this performance; Tara was a student from 2004-2008 and a flute faculty member from 2015-2019. Yvonne's three children graduated from Luther, and she served as a collaborative pianist at Luther from 2004-2007.
