Best of the Rest: Forgotten gems from the 1919 Berkshire Festival Competition.

This year marks the centenary of the 1919 Berkshire Festival Competition. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge decided that year's competition was to be for new works for viola and piano. Over 70 entries were received, all scores marked with pseudonyms. That year, the competition was settled in a draw between Suite by Ernest Bloch and the Sonata by Rebecca Clarke. Although Coolidge did cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of Bloch, both pieces have become staples of the viola repertoire.

Sadly, the official list of entries has been lost to history. Recent scholarship has been attempting to recreate the list by looking at works composed in 1918 or 1919, and/or published anytime from 1918 to 1923. The works presented on this program are considered works with a strong probability of being entries into the competition.

Tyler Hendrickson '08, in collaboration with Jennica Monnier, presents this recital as part of the Guest Recital series. He will be featuring works by Joseph Ryelandt, William Henry Reed, and Arthur Foote.
