The students in the fall 2014 opera workshop course will present “Orpheus Meets Shakespeare” on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:00pm and Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1:30pm in the Noble Recital Hall on the campus of Luther College, in Decorah, Iowa.
The program is free and open to the public.
The program will feature an excerpt of Monteverdi’s Orfeo, one of the earliest works of opera and one of many settings of the myth of Orpheus, a demigod renowned for his musical skill. Dance historian and choreographer Jane Peck of Dance Revels provided instruction in dance and gesture appropriate to the period for the students in this scene.
The program will also include opera scenes drawn from works based on Shakespeare’s plays, including Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Bellini’s I Capuletti ed i Montecchi, Giannini’s Taming of the Shrew, and Verdi’s Falstaff.
The cast will include Katherine Bergman, Colin Berry, Aaron Budihas, Brianna Clancy, Emily Clay, Madeline Craig, Max Elliott, Wes Frye, Tatyana German, Kelly Harris, Genevieve Kalland, Alvin Kim, Ben King Quale, Micki Kruse, Martin Kulstad, Chelanga Langason, Jennifer LeDoux, Kelly Lokensgard, James Mueller, Braun Oldenkamp, Patrick Pauloski, Lexi Polk, Sam Raiche, Scott Senko, Brianna Shelly, Cecilia Shutt, Seamus St. Clair, Kirby Stalley, Allison Vollinger, Bryan Waznik, Jaime Webb, and Nathan Wiley.
