The students of MUS 185: Introduction to Opera Scenes will present a diverse program of fully staged scenes from some of opera’s greatest works on Tuesday, January 28th, 2020 at 7:00pm in the Jenson-Noble Recital Hall. Admission is free to the general public, and is a green-card credited event for all student music majors and minors.
MUS 185 is a 4-credit course designed to survey the history of opera, highlight important moments in the genre, and discover the complexities involved in staging music and drama together. Through workshops of stage movement and dramatic performance, lectures in history, and musical rehearsals, this year’s group of 21 first-year students have created a full opera scenes program from its beginning stages within this January term. With this knowledge, students will continue to perform, produce, critique, and consume opera with a wider appreciation and fuller connection to what is truly “operatic”- grand, structured, subversive, and full of deeply human stories and awe-inspiring music.
