Piano Studies at Luther College
Luther College welcomes all piano students, regardless of their disciplinary major, who wish to take piano at the collegiate level. Our piano faculty are caring and experienced professionals who are also artist teachers, performers, and scholars. The college boasts one of the finest piano collections in the region, comprising eight concert grand pianos, 35 smaller grand pianos, 71 uprights (nearly half of which are new), and a forte piano. Four of our concert grand pianos are Steinways, including a Hamburg and two New York Steinways rebuilt in 2012-13. Twenty-two grand pianos are currently in student practice rooms and we expect to purchase an additional six to eight Steinways for students by 2016. The entire collection is overseen by a full-time piano tuner/technician who also provides instruction in piano technology. Students can also study harpsichord, organ, and collaborative keyboard to enhance their musical understanding and skills.
Every year Luther College keyboard graduates are accepted into America’s most prestigious graduate programs where they earn master's and doctoral degrees from schools like Eastman, Emory University, Yale, University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Roosevelt University, the University of Texas at Austin and Bowling Green State University. Our graduates enjoy satisfying careers as college professors, opera conductors, vocal coaches, collaborative pianists, directors of church music and community and preparatory school teachers.
