Bishop Munib Younan residency at Luther College

Bishop Munib Younan, Bishop Emeritus of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, will be coming for a week of residency with Luther College and the Decorah community September 26th – October 1st. There are several opportunities for the community to hear Bishop Younan and engage in conversation.

  • Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7:00pm in the Center for Faith and Life Recital hall, Bishop Younan will give a lecture, The Role of Religion in Peace-building in the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, that is open to the public at no cost.
  • Friday, Sept. 27 at 10:30am in the Center for Faith and Life Main hall, Bishop Younan will preach during Weekday Chapel.
  • Saturday, Sept 28 at 9:30am at Decorah UCC, 209 W Broadway St., Decorah, IA, the community may join in breakfast conversation with Bishop Younan.
  • Sunday, Sept 29 at 9:30am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave, Decorah, IA, Bishop Younan will serve as preacher for Sunday worship.
  • Sunday, Sept 29 at 7:00pm, CFL 205, Bishop Younan meets with Interfaith in Action student group.

A high-profile lecturer and speaker, Younan is sought after for his perspective on just peace as a Palestinian Christian. Younan is also active in interreligious encounter, ecumenism and reconciliation in his own region and internationally. His work has been recognized with numerous awards and prizes, including the 2019 Pacem in Terris award from the Diocese of Davenport. The author of Witnessing for Peace: In Jerusalem and the World (Augsburg Fortress, USA, 2003), Our Shared Witness: A Voice of Justice and Reconciliation (Lutheran University Press, 2012), and of The Augsburg Confession in Arabic (Emerezian Est., Jerusalem, 1993), Younan has written numerous articles, lectures and presentations relating to the life of Palestinian Lutherans in the Middle East. 

Bishop Younan's residency is sponsored through College Ministries, Campus Programming and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement. Bishop Younan will also be visiting classes and meeting with student groups during his campus residency.
