Congregational Council Elections

Calling forth student leaders! All members of the student congregation (any student who chooses to participate) are eligible to run for and vote for council positions. You can nominate yourself or another student. Elections will be held May 5-8.

As a community of faith the Luther College Congregation seeks to be a place of Christian hospitality, celebrating the diverse gathering of the Body of Christ through its commitment to ecumenical conversation and partnership. As an ELCA congregation, we share the Good News of Jesus in Word and Sacrament. Serving on the Student Congregation Council requires a commitment to Christ’s ministry and support of the Luther Congregation and Luther College as ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The Luther Congregation Council meets throughout the year (Tuesdays at 9:40 a.m.) to discuss, plan, and lead the ministry of the Luther Congregation. Each of these positions requires a significant commitment of time and energy. A brief summary of each position is further down.

If you feel called, encouraged, interested in serving on the 2019-20 council:

  1. Submit a complete nomination form by Monday, May 1.
  2. Plan to be at the Congregational Meeting Thursday, May 2, 9:40 a.m., CFL Recital Hall to confirm nominations.
  3. Keep your schedule open for a meeting of the new council this spring: Tuesday, May 14 at 9:40 a.m.
  4. Remember: All Council members are required to attend the orientation retreat the week before the academic year begins (Friday, August 30th).

Position Descriptions

President -Leads meetings, sets agendas with input from other council members and campus pastors; represents Congregation at Board of Regents' meetings, Student Senate, and other groups as needed.

Vice President - Represents Congregation in lieu of president, serves as liaison for College Ministries groups such as Catholic Student Community, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Student Group, Muslim Student Association and Allies, and the Interfaith Student Association.

Secretary - Keeps minutes and records for the Congregation and Council; handles correspondence for the Council.

Treasurer - Keeps financial records for the Congregation and raises awareness about stewardship; handles deposits, offerings, and writes check requests for the Congregation. Reports financial updates to Council.

Deacon of Spiritual Formation - Coordinates formation of Bible Study and book discussion groups, plans special events through the year. High time commitment at the beginning of each semester forming groups and gathering resources.

Deacon of Community Action - Coordinates service projects of the Congregation including Luther Serves (Fall and Spring Fling) and Adopt-a-Grandparent. High time commitment around events, particularly Fall and Spring Fling.

Deacon of Global Concerns - Coordinates monthly meetings with Concerns Groups leaders; serves as liaison to Congregation and groups; directs resources and information to appropriate groups; assist in planning events as requested. High time commitment required at the start of the year and with special events.

Deacon of Outreach - Coordinates the Outreach Ministry of the Congregation. In coordination with College Ministries staff, the Outreach Assistant (a work-study position), and team leaders: establishes teams and leaders, coordinates outings, plans a fall all outreach retreat (and possibly other retreats in J-term or spring), leads Outreach leaders meetings, plans Closing Vespers, plans in-reach opportunities on campus. Together with the Outreach Assistant, serves as liaison between churches and team leaders. High time commitment.

Deacon of Worship - Coordinates student involvement in the worship life of the community. Together with the Worship Volunteer Coordinator (a work-study position) coordinates the scheduling and training of worship leaders (ushers, lectors, and communion servers) for Sunday morning worship. Attends weekly Sunday worship planning meetings. Works with College Ministries staff to plan schedules, train leaders, and send information and weekly reminders to leaders.
