SIGUCCS Fall 2007 Conference

   The SIGUCCS 2007
Fall Conference was held in Orlando, Florida, October 7-10.  I went to this event excited to see
presentations on the topics of
Microsoft Vista and  on image
deployment/software distribution. The presentations on Vista were a disappointment
to many that I spoke with. There was little substance, and what we heard was
about test labs or small deployments. Many in the audience were like Luther –
waiting until summer ’08 or until the first service pack of Vista is released.

   Presentations on
imaging and software distribution  were
much better. Although there is much research and work for us to be done in
regards to building “universal” images, the promise of simplifying this process
is very exciting. A presentation  from
Loras showed the benefits they saw in using LANDesk, an image and application
deployment system (among other things). As a result, Luther is considering a
LANDesk system of our own, and have had a pilot system installed for
evaluation.
