Check for Print or Electronic Journal Availability

Check the Catalog

If you find a citation for an article and wonder if it is available in print and/or electronic form from Preus Library, just search the catalog for the article. Here's how:

  1. Search WorldCat Discovery (the library's catalog) for the title of the article.
    • If you get many results, you may have to limit to "Article/Chapter" using the checkboxes on the left column of the results page.
  2. When you find the article in your search results, look for "Held by: Luther College" in the catalog record - that means it can be found in our print or online collections.
    • Click the article title to view the detailed description of the article and scroll down to the Availability tab.
    • If the article is available online, there will be one or more links to "View full text" in the databases where it is available.
    • If the article is available in print, a local call number and location will be displayed for the journal title. Be sure to have the volume, issue, and page numbers handy if you are going to the stacks to find the print version of the article.
  3. If an article is not available locally, you may see a link to "Request item via Interlibrary Loan." Submitting an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request will allow you to borrow an article or book from another library.
    • If you've never used ILL before, you'll have to set up your account first.

Finding an Article from Google Scholar

From on-campus, Google Scholar will automatically display "Find it at Preus Library" links if an article is available through one of our databases.

If you're off campus, this same feature can be set up using the following steps:

  1. In Google Scholar, click the "hamburger" menu in the upper left corner,
  2. Click the bottom link, "Settings," from the menu that appears.
  3. Click "Library links" from the Settings menu on the left.
  4. Search for Luther College in the search box.
  5. Check "Luther College - Find it at Preus Library" and click "Save."

You can always follow the "Check the Catalog" steps above, too.
