If you scan an item barcode and a window pops up with a message about creating an “item-on-the-fly,” close the window and try scanning the barcode again. If the same message comes up again, then the barcode is most likely not linked with the item in the library system. Place it on the Circulation Supervisor’s desk with a note to have the situation corrected. Include the patron’s name and ID number if they want to be contacted once the item is available for checkout.
If the patron strongly desires the item right at that moment, record each piece of the following information: the patron’s name and ID number and the call number, barcode, and title of the item. Leave this information in a note on the Circulation Supervisor’s desk and allow the patron to take the item with them. Once the barcode is linked to the item in the library system, the supervisor will perform a manual checkout.
