Hello to all! We hope your holidays have been wonderful and that you're as excited for the new year to start as we are!
We are Olivia Benson and Hannah Sutcliffe and we'll be your blog coordinators for the Education Observations J-Term in Gallup, New Mexico. We're eentusiastic about this unique opportunity and we can't wait to share it with you!
Here's a quick summary of what we'll be doing in Gallup. The seven of us are going to be placed in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms around the city, giving us the opportunity to observe and assist teachers in different capacities in whichever aspect of education we wish to persue. Our days will be spent in the classroom with seminars back in our dormitory, and of course some sightseeing on weekends! The general of goal of this J-Term is to give us a taste of what teaching is really like and to gain context for our future Education classes.
A little about me, Olivia! I am a freshman at Luther and when I'm not on campus I live in St. Paul, Minnesota. I am a elementary education major with a Spanish minor. I also play alto saxophone in the Wind and Percussion Ensemble at Luther and am involved with HOLA/Enlaces, the Spanish club, and I am an after-school K-2 tutor. In what little free time I have, I enjoy reading, canoeing, camping, dancing, knitting, swimming and playing the ukelele. I am thrilled to be going on this J-Term trip! I love opportunites that broaden my world view and can't wait to experience such a different part of the country.
And now, Hannah (that's me)! Like Olivia, I am also a freshman at Luther, hailing from the fair riverside town of Stillwater, Minnesota. Currently, I'm persuing environmental studies and biology, and if all goes well this J-Term, a secondary education minor. At Luther, I'm a part of Philharmonia as a violinist, a member of the Luther College Feminists, and part of the PALS program with my seven-year old Little. When I'm not surrounded by science textbooks or in lab, you can find me in a tree, a tent, a garden, hiking through Decorah, or in a booth in the caf with a book and a mug of coffee, because you really can't beat unlimited coffee with a meal swipe! In the summers, I work at a Boy Scout camp in northern Wisconsin, which I can definitely blame for the teaching bug I've caught. I adore traveling and meeting new people. I'm coming for you, Gallup!
We are both thrilled to be taking part in this J-Term and can't wait to be sharing our experiences with you! If you have any questions or comments about the blog, our trip, or have something you'd like to read about, feel free to email us at [email protected] or [email protected]
All the best!
