The Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz

Today was our first full day in the beautiful city of San Francisco, and also the first day we could see the sun! This morning we rented some bikes and took a very scenic route across the Golden Gate Bridge and into the town of Sausalito. It was a perfect day for a bike ride, and the views of San Francisco from the bridge and Sausalito were amazing!

After the bike ride, some of stopped for a quick bite to eat at In-N-Out for some burgers. Then we got ready for our three hour night tour of Alcatraz! The tour was really cool. It started with a ferry ride around the island and then we were allowed to walk anywhere we wanted in the public viewing areas of the island. We walked through the different parts of the former prison while listening to an audio tour, watched a “cell door” presentation that showed the opening and closing of the cells and what it meant to the inmates, and watched the sun set over the Golden Gate Bridge. It was definitely kind of creepy walking through the same rooms and hallways that Al Capone and other notorious criminals once lived in, and the information from audio tour was fascinating. I think the most interesting part was when they talked about the different escape attempts from inmates of the island. One case involved an inmate who would take a little bit of a guard’s uniform at a time while doing laundry over a ten year period. Once he had the whole uniform, he wore it under his uniform and slipped out of his uniform when no one was looking then walked uncontested onto the guard’s ship heading towards Angel Island. This did not work out however, as the guards realized there was a missing prisoner immediately and were waiting for him as he landed on Angel Island.

After the tour of Alcatraz, we went out to eat at a Mexican restaurant called Taqueria Zorro. Their burritos are big, cheap, and probably the best I have ever had. I highly recommend it. Anyways, now we are all back at the hotel relaxing. It was a great first day in San Francisco, and should be a great week of company visits and enjoying the city!
