Frances Ann (Joerg) Blum-McCarthy,Esq., 77, passed away Feb. 23, 2018, in West Palm Beach, Fla., after an 18-month battle with cancer.
Franny was born in Caledonia, Minn., to Leslie and Luiverne Joerg of Caledonia. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church and there later married David Hansen, from whom she was divorced in 1967.
Franny attended Caledonia High School and Luther College and earned her B.A. from the University of Minnesota. A pianist who performed locally at churches and functions across Minnesota, Franny received a scholarship to Juilliard in New York, where she studied piano with Nadia Reisenberg and earned a Masters in Musicology before embarking on a career as a concert pianist.
In New York, Franny met her second husband, Robert Blum, a writer and producer at CBS News. Franny and Bob moved to Montclair, N.J., to raise their children, Jenna, Lesley, and Joey Blum. In 1986 Franny began attending Rutgers Law School, from which she earned her J.D. in 1991; she passed the bar exam in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota and worked as an attorney in N.J. and part-time with her brother, David Joerg, in Preston, Minn.
Franny relocated to Fla. in 2002, where she met her third husband, Albert “Mac” McCarthy, after Robert’s death in 1999. In Fla. Franny enjoyed sun, the beach, her dogs, Scotch, cigarettes, good books, and the company of her family, often returning to visit her lifelong friends and gallivant with the “Trash Gang” in Caledonia.
She is survived by her brothers David and Lowell Joerg ‘51 and their families, her daughters Jenna Blum and Lesley M. M. Blume, her son Joey Blum, and her grand-daughter Oona Macek.
