Phyllis (Dahle) Paulson, 97, Wausau, Wis., died Dec. 12, 2016, at Wellington Place of Rib Mountain. She was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Decorah, Iowa, to Odin and Beatta Dahle. A good student, golfer, and figure skater, Phyllis attended Luther College where she met Vernon ‘Bud’ Paulson ‘40. After her graduation, Phyllis and Bud were married on Nov. 2, 1941.
They began married life in Louisville, Ky., where Bud worked as a chemist during WW II. In 1945 they moved to Bud’s hometown of Galloway, Wis. Raising four children and assisting in the family businesses - Galloway Hardware, Plumbing and Heating, and Wittenberg Laundromat - was a busy time for Phyllis. An active church life included Ladies Aid, teaching Sunday school, making quilts for the mission work, and a term as church council president.
Retirement brought more time for travel, including trips to Norway to research family history. In 1992 they moved to the home they built in Rib Mountain where Phyllis enjoyed volunteering at the library with books for shut-ins and at a nursing home. In her last 14 years, challenged with Alzheimer’s disease, Phyllis remained strong in her faith and generous with her smiles.
Phyllis is survived by three sons, Michael Paulson ’68 of Fort Collins, Colo.; Eric Paulson ’70 of Juneau, Alaska; and Karl (Laurie) Paulson of Pacifica, Calif.; one daughter, Louise Paulson ‘76 of Wausau; two grandsons, Orin and Brent; a brother-in-law Carl (Shirley) Paulson of Oshkosh; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Bud, her husband of 64 years, and her sister, Rosalie (Dahle) Hansen ‘47.
