The family of Thomas John Tuttle is deeply saddened to announce his passing on April 7, 2017, at the age of 73. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Jacobs Tuttle of Alameda, his daughter Denise Tuttle O’Donnell (Kevin) and grandson Dane O’Donnell of Milwaukee, Wis.
Tom is survived by three brothers: Gary (Lara) Engebretson of Virginia; Robert (Sarah) Engebretson and Dennis Engebretson of Iowa. He is also survived by two brothers- and sisters-in-law: Nancy Wonder (Rob) and John Jacobs (Patty) of Alameda, as well as by many nieces and nephews and extended family in Alameda and across the nation.
Tom was born in December 1943 in Charles County, Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, immediately after graduating from Clear Lake High School in Iowa in 1961. After receiving an honorable discharge, Tom went on to further his education. He attended the University of Iowa, Luther College, Vanderbilt University and Iowa State University, earning a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees.
Tom’s award-winning career in journalism as a sports and news writer, an editor, a columnist and editorial director took him to work at newspapers in Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota and California.
He was proud to have recently served on the Alameda County grand jury for a year. He enjoyed reading, writing, music and sports. He openly shared his interests with family and friends. He relished his daily walks with his dachshunds over the years.
A private memorial service was held. Memorial donations in Tom’s memory can be made to the American Heart Association.
