Cassandra Warner ‘85

Cassandra L. “Cassie” Warner came to Luther College from Mason City, Iowa. She majored in accounting and economics and was also a four-year letter winner in volleyball and softball. She captained both teams and was named the Most Valuable Player on the volleyball team in 1983 and 1984. She was also active in the Tau Delta Gamma sorority and held the treasurer position.

Cassie worked for eight years in public accounting as a staff accountant and manager with McGladrey & Pullen before entering the construction industry as Controller with Knutson Construction Company where she served for three years. She joined Weis Builders in 1996 as their chief financial officer and was quickly promoted to senior vice president.

Cassie has built a solid reputation for herself, among other accomplishments. At Weis Builders, Cassie was instrumental in assisting Weis to exceed many company-wide goals, one of which was reaching the $1 billion in project starts over a three-year period. Maintaining both company and client expectations, Cassie has led Weis’ financial operations, legal, risk management, human resources  and information technology. She is instrumental in development of systems and reporting that has allowed Weis to continue to grow and expand into multiple geographies and start up many sister Companies. She has helped increase annual revenues year over year through a group leadership model that is overseeing four office locations.

Professionally, Warner is a member of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of CPAs, and the Construction Financial Management Association.

In 2018 Cassie was named one of the Top Women in Finance by Finance & Commerce magazine.

Over the years, Cassie has served on multiple non-profit organizations in board and leadership positions, including Resources for Child Caring, (now called Think Small) Cornerstone (serving families with domestic abuse), the Gillette Children’s Hospital and Gillette Children’s Hospital Foundation. She also volunteers regularly for Habitat for Humanity, The Humane Society, Feed my Starving Children, and other worthy non-profits.

For the last fifteen years, Cassie has been significantly involved in the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Minnesota. She currently serves as a member of the board of directors and treasurer for both the Minnesota ACLU, and the ACLU of Minnesota Foundation. She also chairs the finance committee and is active with the executive committee. She feels strongly that, “Today’s environment requires that we all stand up and recognize each other as equals and not let our civil liberties be taken away.” She is passionate about supporting the work of their racial justice program, and protecting voting rights. Today more than ever, she is proud of the work the ACLU has done to support and create awareness on these issues. She lives by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s quote, “Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”

While not advocating for equity, equality and justice, you may find Cassie discussing the latest craft brewery. She is involved in two craft breweries in St. Paul, Minn., Tin Whiskers, and Bad Weather Brewery, along with Far North Spirits distillery in Hallock, Minn.

Additionally, Cassie’s entrepreneurial energy doesn’t stop at the end of the work day. She has been involved in multiple real estate ventures. She and a team are in current development of Portico at the Falls condominiums in Minneapolis.

At Luther, Cassie is a member of the President’s Council and Heritage Club. She established the Warner Family Scholarship at Luther in 2014. Cassie has also provided challenge gifts for volleyball and softball alumni for Luther’s annual Giving Day, encouraging others to support the college. She is also a member of the Class of 1985 Reunion Giving Committee.

Cassie and her partner, Lisa Powell DVM, live in Golden Valley, Minnesota.
