Jacki Wright ‘75
Jacki Wright came to Luther College from Nashua (Iowa) High School and majored in Physical Education and Health.
She joined the staff at Wapsie Valley (Iowa) High School in 1975 as a 7-12 physical education teacher. At Wapsie Valley she coached girls’ basketball, softball, and track and field.
She joined the Luther College staff in 1985, and served as an assistant coach for highly successful Women’s Basketball and Softball teams. She earned the master’s degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1989, and the Ed.D. degree in sports psychology from the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1993. In 2005, she earned the Certified Holistic Stress Management Instructor and Consultant (CHSMI) from the National Wellness Conference in Stevens Point, Wis., and Vail, Colo.
She was inducted into the Hall of Excellence by the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services at the University of Northern Iowa in 2011.
While at Luther she was active in the professional organizations of SHAPE America, and the Iowa Association for Health Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (IAHPERD). She was an invited speaker and presenter to several conventions, high schools, and Luther athletic teams on the topics of managing stress and a variety of sport psychology topics, such as developing confidence, mental toughness, and imagery. She retired from Luther in 2020 as professor emerita.
In retirement, Jacki enjoys the company of her dogs, a German Shepherd and a Berger Picard, as well as training them in obedience, rally obedience, and scent work. She is also a canine massage therapist and enjoys helping dogs relax as well as helping them to either prepare for surgery or recover from surgery via massage therapy. She enjoys working part-time at the Decorah Veterinary Clinic as a receptionist and looks forward to working at The Good Dog Center in Decorah next summer. She also enjoys coaching a competitive granny basketball team: LC Decorah Troll Trotters.
