Roger Jaeger, a 1972 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, will be presented the Luther College Athletics Meritorious Service Award.
Normally, this award is presented during Homecoming weekend at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the college made the difficult decision to not host an in-person Homecoming this year. Instead, the college will offer virtual Homecoming events Oct. 9-11. Jaeger will be honored along with the 2020 Hall of Fame Class on Saturday, Oct. 10, during this virtual weekend. A formal in-person ceremony will take place on a date yet to be determined.
Jaeger was selected for this honor by the Hall of Fame committee comprised of current coaches, administrative staff and athletics alumni, for his service and dedication to Luther College athletics.
Jaeger, who has been semi-retired since 2012, has played a major role in the development of students and athletes for the past four decades.
He came to Luther during the 1980-81 school year hired as the head wrestling coach, a title he held for two years. For the next 31 years he was an assistant football coach and also served a number of roles for the athletic department including Director of Athletic Facilities.
During his tenure, he was the grounds keeper for baseball and softball; assisted in the planning of the Sports and Recreation Center; assisted in the planning and building of the Legends Fitness Center; planned and oversaw the renovation of the Health and Physical Education and visiting locker rooms; developed protocols and risk management plan for the Community Use Program for the Regents Center; managed the Luther High Ropes and Challenge course. Perhaps his biggest challenge was the renovation of the baseball, softball, soccer and practice fields and the North Gym floor after the 2008 flood.
Since his retirement, Jaeger has continued to share his love of fishing to students, teaching fly fishing and ice fishing skills classes. He has taught fly fishing for 17 years and ice fishing the past three winters.
Roger and his wife, Vicky, have three alumni children: Justin ’03 (Vicky), John ’05 (Carrie (Beaver) Jaeger ‘07) and Jerry ’09 (Michelle). They are grandparents to Isabella (4), Harper (9), Elise (7), Jensen (6), Emery (4) and Maren (2).
The Luther College Athletics Meritorious Service Award was created to honor those who have provided distinguished service in a support role for Luther College athletics. Jaeger is the third recipient of this award.
