Jim Helgason came to Luther College from Harding High School in St. Paul, Minn., and majored in history and physical education. He earned a master’s degree in education from United States International University in San Diego, Calif., in 1988.

Jim taught social studies and physical education and coached football, wrestling, basketball and baseball  at Washington High School in St. Paul, Minn., from 1970 to 1975. He also served as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard from 1970 to 1976.

Helgason joined the staff as a resource specialist and special education department chair at Carmel (Calif.) High School in 1977, served on the Curriculum and Finance Group from 1990-2010, and also served on the Faculty Senate from 1999-2010. During his years at Carmel, he coached football (1977-84), baseball (1977-85), and volleyball (1984-91). He received the Allen Griffin Award for Excellence Teaching from Carmel High School in 2006. He retired and received the 33-year CUSD Service Award in 2010.

Jim and his wife Lesle reside in Pebble Beach, Calif., and are members of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Monterey. Jim has served as president of the St. Timothy Foundation, Inc., since 2015, as vice president of the church council since 2019, and as chair of the property committee since 2003. Jim was a volunteer transporter and foster for the Animal Friends Rescue Project from 2000 to 2015. Jim and Lesle are parents of two adult sons, Rodney and Jared, and grandparents to Ulysses (11), Delphine (8), and Tallulah (4).
