Norse Mail - Default Mail Client

As of March 2012, it is now possible to make Norse Mail the default mail client in your web browser. This will allow you to click on an email link and have it open in your web browser. Use the instructions below to configure Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the Firefox menu (upper left) and select Preferences.
  2. Select Applications.
  3. Search for the Content Type: mailto and select.
  4. Click on the Actions column in the mailto row.
  5. Select Use Gmail.
  6. Close the Preferences window.

Google Chrome

Support for opening mail links is standard in Google Chrome though users will have to give the program permission to do so. The steps below should work for but some users have reported needing to use instead.

  1. Launch Google Chrome.
  2. Go to your mail page ( or and sign in.
  3. You should be prompted to ‘Allow Gmail ( to open all email links?’
  4. Click Use Gmail.

If you’ve accidentally clicked No or closed the prompt, do the following:

  1. Click the Wrench Icon on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Options (Preferences on Mac) and then Under the Hood.
  3. Click Content Settings.
  4. Find the Handlers section.
  5. Select Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols.
  6. Go to your mail page ( or
  7. You should be prompted to ‘Allow Gmail ( to open all email links?’
  8. Click Use Gmail.

Internet Explorer

  1. Click on the Toolbar’s Wrench icon.
  2. On the Search tab, select ‘Use Gmail for “Mail To” links’ checkbox.
  3. Click Save.



1. Sign into Norse Mail.

2. Copy and paste the following command into your Address Bar:

3. Press Enter.

4. A bar or pop-up window will appear prompting you to Add the Application. Click OK.

5. Click on Tools – Options (Mac: Click on Firefox – Preferences).

6. Select Applications.

7. Locate Mailto.

8. Select Norse Mail from the list of actions associated with Mailto.
