Many computer hardware manufacturers and retailers offer academic pricing discounts. As employees of an educational institution, Luther College faculty and staff can take advantage of this discount to buy software for their personal computers at low prices. Some discount programs for specific hardware products are detailed below, but you can often find academic pricing deals just by inquiring of retailers or visiting academic-specific web sites such as http://www.academicsuperstore.com.
Luther faculty and staff are eligible for academic discounts on Apple hardware. The Luther Apple Store has been set up to provide academic pricing on Apple products to students, faculty, and staff. Discounted hardware includes MacBooks, iMacs, iPods, and iPhones. Visit the store to see all available products. There is often a Back to School special offer in place spring through fall.
Luther College is currently enrolled in the Dell University program. Faculty, staff, and students can get good academic pricing on Dell PCs, TVs, and printers at http://dell.luther.edu, or find more deals in the Dell Education Purchase Program and view the Dell promotional flyer.
As ITS collects used equipment that is done serving its purpose at Luther, it is sold online. ITS sells used computer equipment until its supply is depleted. Purchased items are paid for and picked up in Preus Library 221 and a disclaimer is signed at that time. Personal checks and cash are accepted; credit cards are not. Due to the constant threats of viruses and malware, all computers that access the Luther network must have an anti-virus software installed with up-to-date definitions. Sophos is installed by default on Luther-owned workstations.
Faculty, staff, and students are required to acquire and install an anti-virus for their personally-owned computers. For your convenience, we have provided a list of anti-virus recommendations at https://www.luther.edu/helpdesk/antivirus/

Since Luther College is part of the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (IAICU) Adobe ETLA, Luther faculty and staff can be assigned a Named User license which allows them to be logged in to up to 2 machines running Creative Cloud for which they are the primary user. Those who are interested in this option need to contact the Technology Help Desk.
Luther faculty and staff are also eligible for discounts on Apple software. The Luther Apple Store that is in place for buying computers also provides academic pricing on Apple software. Visit the store and click on the Apple Software link on the menu on the left-hand side of the page.
When acquiring software for your device, consider open source alternatives to MS Office such as Norse Apps (i.e. Norse Mail, Norse Docs, etc), Libre Office, and Open Office. Norse Apps is available to every Luther faculty, staff, and student. In addition, for personal use, faculty and staff may create their own personal Google account.
Luther College employees have access to all services that Preus Library provides, including checking out books from the Main Stacks. Faculty and staff can check out books for an entire semester (with some exceptions; see the detailed policy). They can also check out laptops for 2-week periods and media equipment for 24 hour periods. For longer-term borrowing of equipment, see the “Equipment Loan” section below. Luther College employees have access to all services that Preus Library provides, including InterLibrary Loan (ILL). ILL services are a way for you to checkout books, VHS tapes, microfilm, journal articles, and other library items from libraries other than Preus. You can even have electronic copies of journal articles emailed to you. This service is open to faculty and staff spouses as well, if they have obtained a Norse Key from the Technology Help Desk.
Preus Library has access to over 50 electronic databases and indexes of journals and their articles. The library’s subscriptions include both general and subject-specific databases. Faculty and staff can access and search these databases when on the Luther network. Faculty and staff can borrow equipment from the Technology Help Desk in Preus Library for short-term loans (typically two weeks or less). Equipment available for borrowing includes laptops, LCD projectors, public address sound systems, TVs and DVD players, and laser pointers; a complete list of items is available. ITS does full hardware repair on Luther-owned equipment for faculty and staff. In addition, the ITS Technology Help Desk provides limited hardware and software re-installs for personally owned computers of Luther students, faculty, and staff. LinkedIn Learning is an online course website offering video courses taught by industry experts in software, creative, and business skills. All faculty, staff, and students should visit linkedinlearning.luther.edu and sign in with their Norse Key username and password to access this service.
Citrix is the best option for Faculty and Staff who are using their personal devices or who need to use Windows software from a Mac. Citrix works by connecting to a server on campus that runs a virtual instance of a Windows computer. Citrix is often much faster than the VPN Client when running programs that use local campus resources (e.g. Colleague).
VPNWeb is a fair option if you regularly need to access a small number of campus-only webpages. If your need is only occasional, you need to use an application like Perceptive Content, or you need to do significant amount of work, FortiClient or Citrix are better options.
To use VPNWeb, navigate to vpnweb.luther.edu and log in using your Norse Key. Before you use this service for the first time, you must contact the Technology Help Desk to be authorized. For information, see our VPNWeb page.
The VIA VPN client is the best option for most Faculty and Staff. It works by creating a secure tunnel to the Luther network, allowing your workstation to behave as though it were on Luther’s network. Resources that can normally be accessed only while on campus can be accessed through the VPN tunnel. These include network places, printers, or applications.
The VIA VPN client is installed by request on Luther College faculty and staff computers, and cannot be installed onto devices that aren't Luther-owned. Learn more at our VIA (Virtual Intranet Access) VPN page.
