Luther College families, students and community members are invited to enjoy a variety of concerts, athletic events, hikes and meals together throughout Family Weekend Sept. 21-23.
On Friday at 10:30 a.m., Luther junior Ashalul Aden, recent recipient of the Rising Star Award from Interfaith Youth Core, speaks in chapel. In the evening at 7:30 p.m., Center Stage Series features Spanish bagpiper Christina Pato and her quartet, fusing the styles of Latin, jazz, pop and contemporary music. On Saturday morning, families may attend the Pancake Feed at St. Benedict's Parish Hall in Decorah, a fundraiser for Luther's Habitat for Humanity spring break service trip. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for ages 5-12 and no charge for children under 5. People looking to enjoy a nature hike may gather in front of the Dahl Centennial Union at 9 a.m. Saturday for a walk through Luther's woodlands and prairies. The Vesterheim Museum in downtown Decorah is also open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. showcasing live demonstrations and the new exhibit "Christian Midjo: Choose Your Own Artventure." Canoe and kayak trips on the Upper Iowa River at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. are currently full, but interested parties may add their names to a short waiting list for the morning trip: https://www.luther.edu/recservices/outdoor-recreation/fallevents/.
At 2 p.m., a reception for first-generation college students and family members will take place in the Center for the Arts Atrium with a welcome by Luther College President Paula J. Carlson and Dean Corey Landstrom. All seniors and their families are invited to an informal Senior Class Reception in Dahl Centennial Union's Peace Dining Room at 5 p.m. Saturday. Home athletic events on Saturday include the Luther Invitational for women's golf at noon at the Oneota Golf and Country Club. Football will be playing Loras College at 1 p.m. on the Carlson Stadium Legacy Field; at 2 p.m. in the Regents Center, volleyball will take on the College of St. Benedict.
A sampling of Luther's vocal and instrumental ensembles will perform on Family Weekend, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life with the Luther College Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra. Four choirs and two instrumental ensembles will perform in the evening's Family Weekend Concert at 7 p.m. Following the concert, Luther's Student Activities Council will host a Soda Shoppe ice cream event at 8:45 p.m. in Marty's in the Dahl Centennial Union with performances by Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra.
With special music from Nordic Choir, Sunday morning worship will be held in the Center for Faith and Life at 10 a.m. In the Dahl Centennial Union, second floor, Peace Brunch is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; reservations are recommended.
A final kayak and canoe trip will begin at noon. Those wishing to go should sign up online to be added to the waitlist listed above.
