The second Song Jam of the 2012-13 Luther College Art Song Jamboree series will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, March 18, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus.
Art Song Jamboree, a music series dedicated to the exploration of art song, new and old, is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Jessica Paul, Luther professor of music, has been the creator and lead advocate of the Art Song series, part of her ongoing research and mission to find art songs written by composers of all eras, musical styles, languages and nationalities.
Performers in each "jam" program are a mix of musicians from the Luther music faculty and vocal students under the direction of Paul. One of the featured vocalists is Luther alumni guest lecturer in music Kylie Toomer, soprano.
Luther student musicians on the program include Nathan Wiley, Tara Laughlin, Emily Davis, Erin Persick, Mary Lieberman, Molly Clementz, Christine O'Brien, Evan Mitchell, Kelsey Brown, Kathryn Lillich and Steven Halloin, with Paul collaborating on piano. Jordan Buchholtz, Luther senior and pianist, is assisting in preparation of singers.
The jamboree will include songs composed by Irena Wieniawska Poldowski, Lode van Dessel, Mel Bonis, Mathilde von Kralik, Fanny Hensel, Adela Maddison, Pauline Viardot and Madeleine Dring.
Paul, a native of Chicago, holds a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Northwestern University. She holds the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in vocal coaching and accompanying from the University of Illinois.
Frequently engaged as a collaborative pianist and guest clinician, Paul has worked with opera several companies including the Pittsburgh Opera Theatre, Opera Theatre of Illinois, National Opera Company, Cleveland Opera Theatre, Virginia Opera Association, Lake George Opera Festival, Cedar Rapids Opera and Pine Mountain Music Festival.
Paul is the former principal conductor and artistic director of the Dorian Opera Theatre. In her position as professor of music at Luther she serves as a vocal coach, collaborative pianist and teaches accompanying.
