Luther offers German language classes for Decorah-area elementary students

Sept. 16, 2009

Luther College will offer weekly German language classes to Decorah area students in grades 2-5 during the college’s fall semester.

Classes in the German FLES (Foreign Language for Elementary School) program begin Sept. 21.  Classes will be conducted each Monday from 4-4:45 p.m. on the Luther campus.

There will be 10 class sessions, and the cost for all 10 sessions is $30 per student, $20 for students eligible for reduced or free school lunches.

To enroll in the classes, or for more information, contact Sheryl Sievert, administrative assistant, Luther College Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, telephone (563) 387-2160.

Through the FLES program, children have the opportunity to learn to speak and understand German through lessons that include games, songs, food and other fun activities.

Elizabeth Steding, Luther assistant professor of German, directs the FLES program and oversees the weekly classes. Luther students assist with the program.

Steding, who holds the doctoral degree from Michigan State University, has five years of public school teaching experience, both in the U.S. and Germany.
