Artist Statement

Chasing the Sublime

Ben Moore is drawn to paintings that explore the sublime, those that depict a place or image so supernatural that we are transported away from this earth while our feet remain planted on the ground. He believes that such images are able to depict where the spiritual manifests itself in the physical world.

Moore spent the fall of 2017 in the rural countryside near Canterbury, United Kingdom where he began the work on this exhibition. The paintings reference imagery "about" place, not direct depictions of a place. Through the accretion of images (places) in a painting, the image becomes a collective of multiple places, in both the immaterial and temporal.

While abroad, Moore was led to the massive rolling coastal hills and cliffs of England where, to his surprise, the fantastical became quotidian experience. The ethereal ceased to hold weight. The powerful content that previously enraptured Moore became an assumption, and inflation of the supernatural. While not discounting the wonder of the landscape, the fantastical turned out to be ultimately normal, becoming sublimely picturesque. When the experience of the sublime is every day, it is dispelled in reality, but still remains a mystery within painting. Moore describes this as "the lie" in painting.
