by Tuan Phan
September 7 – October 9, 2015
A gallery reception will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 4:00 - 5:50 pm in the Hovde Room of Preus Library. The reception, hosted by Clara and Karl Knudson, is in conjunction with an exhibition of photographs created by Clara's brother, Tuan (Don) Phan. All are welcome to attend.
"Photos of Vietnam" gives an intimate look at modern life in Vietnam and closely connects with the upcoming January-term study abroad class, "Paideia 450: Stability and Change in Vietnam" that will be offered to Luther students. The class, combining elements of economics and political science, will travel to several regions of Vietnam, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta to experience different aspects of Vietnamese culture. Several of those locations are featured in Phan's photographs. The class will be led by John Moeller (political science) and Steve Holland (economics). Both professors will be present at the reception.
Photographs by Tuan (Don) Phan have been included in nearly 30 international exhibitions and received multiple awards. In 2003 alone he received 15 international awards, including top ten rankings in both black & white and color (large print divisions) photography. Don came to the United States from Vietnam in 1975 and attended Luther College, graduating in 1977. He then enrolled in graduate school at the University of Iowa, where he earned an accounting degree in 1979. His show at Luther will feature images of Vietnam, including some locations that may be visited by current students during a January 2016 study-abroad course (Paideia 450: Stability and Change in Vietnam - see above). Don currently lives and works in California and is the brother of Decorah resident Clara Knutson.
