Luther College Pond Farm Collection

The Pond Farm Collection in the Luther College Fine Arts Collection is named in honor of noted ceramic artist, Marguerite Wildenhain.  Her home and studio in Guerneville, California, known as Pond Farm, was the site of summer workshops attended by several Luther College students during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  Former art department faculty member Dean Schwarz studied with Wildenhain and was instrumental in developing her relationship with Luther College.  Over her lifetime, she visited Luther at least seven times, presenting workshops and instructing students. In 1969, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in recognition of her many contributions as artist and teacher.  She also became a patron of the arts at Luther College and her superb gift of her own best pots was supplemented with subsequent donations of rare books, her rock and mineral collection, drawings, and important personal papers. She also bequeathed to the College her splendid collection of drawings, woodcuts, and sculptures by her Bauhaus teacher and mentor, the German artist Gerhard Marcks.

Nineteen Luther College artists who studied with Wildenhain at Pond Farm are represented in the Pond Farm Concentration of the Collection.  Nearly all continue to work as professional potters.  Their lives and work extend the legacy of Wildenhain’s Pond Farm workshops and helped establish a strong pottery program in the Luther College art department.  Their generous contributions of personal work to the Luther College Fine Arts Collection are greatly appreciated.

The 75th anniversary of the Luther College Art Department and the Sesquicentennial of Luther College coincide in 2011.  The Sesquicentennial theme, “Transformed by the Journey,” is a fitting description of the Pond Farm experience for alumni represented in this exhibit.
