Center for Faith and Life
February 2 - March 18, 2011
There will be a Gallery Reception on Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. during the Black History Conference. All are invited to attend.
This special exhibit coincides with both the Black History Conference (Feb. 16 & 17) and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum (March 4 & 5). The exhibit therefore contains two distinct but related bodies of work. One-half of the show consists of portraits of notable black Americans and the other half portraits of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.
Prints are for sale by contacting the photographer at (612) 870-7376, or via email.
"Ten members of the Knutson family have attended Luther College: Great Uncle Henry (’31), father Howard (’51), Uncles Roald (’52) and Paul (’59), Henry’s sons Tom (’62) and Jim (’67), my cousins Susan (’82) and Jeff (from 1983-1984), brother Eric (’85) and me (’84). I therefore became aware of Luther College from family events when relatives would talk of their college experiences and express how proud they were to have attended Luther. Despite that, attending Luther was never an expectation for me. My first exposure to the beauty of the campus came at my father’s 25th class reunion, and while attending Luther I fell in love with the Decorah area, made many friends in the community and now often return.
After working four years as a student with Luther College's Photo Bureau and graduating with a degree in philosophy, I began working as a photographer’s assistant in Minneapolis. Following several years of assisting, I began getting my own assignments and established Knutson Photography, Inc. Over the years I have worked for many magazines, including Business Week, Forbes, Fortune, Money, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, Time, and USA Weekend; and many corporations and ad agencies, among them Accenture, ACT, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, The Carlson Companies, Ecolab, Mayo Clinic, Medtronic, and Wings Financial. My work has taken me to most of the lower 48 states, as well as Europe and Asia.
I photographed many of Luther's distinguished lecturers while a student on the Photo Bureau. In 1991, I was able to photograph portraits of the Peace Prize Forum speakers at Luther. This year will be the 18th year I have photographed speakers at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. I also photograph speakers at the Westminster Town Hall Forum in Minneapolis, and the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute's Carlson Lecture series.
My portraits have been on display at The Minneapolis Photo Center, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, The Carlson Lecture series’ 25th anniversary celebration, Augsburg College, Augustana College, Luther College, The University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute, and at Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis.
I use a combination of lighting, composition and expression tell the story and give insight to the subject. Hopefully those viewing the photos will experience some insight into the personalities of the incredible people included in this show.
