Luther College’s revised calendar for the 2020-21 academic year allows flexibility to adapt to the unfolding condition of the pandemic. The college is committed to upholding individual and community health and is monitoring a variety of data to inform decision-making processes. There will be regular decision points throughout the semester when the college will evaluate the situation on campus and in the community to determine if a need exists to move to a different structure for classes and residential living on campus.
Luther College will use the following policy to provide refunds to room and board should it determine that students need to return home prior to the completion of the semester.
The long-term contracts necessary to have students on-campus contain fixed costs that don't decrease when students are off-campus. Therefore, when calculating refunds, the overall charges will first be reduced by 35% to account for these fixed costs, and then the remaining variable costs will be divided by the number of weeks in the term to determine a per week amount.
Example: A double room charge is $2,375, of which $1,543.75 is variable cost ($2,375 * (1-.35) = $1,543.75)
If Luther sends students home for the rest of the semester in week 6 (by November 7, 2020), they would have 10 weeks remaining out of 16 weeks or 62.5% of the term. $1,543.75 * .625 = $964.84 would be their room refund.
Example: The full board charge is $2,680, of which $1,742 is variable cost ($2,680 * (1-.35) = $1,742.00)
If Luther sends students home for the rest of the semester in week 6 (by November 7, 2020), they would have 10 weeks remaining out of 16 weeks or 62.5% of the term. $1,742 * .625 = $1,088.75 would be their board refund.
Luther College will continue to share updates via email and new resources on our Being Community website.
