SUMMARY:Zane Larson ‘19\, “Semper Fi\, Do or Die”: Hegemonic Masculinity in the Musical Dogfight
DESCRIPTION:This lecture focuses on the musical Dogfight (2012) by Dear Evan Hansen and La La Land composer-lyricist duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The musical is set in San Francisco during the midst of the Vietnam War and focuses on a group of marines who spend their last night before deployment causing havoc in the name of sadistic hypermasculine entertainment. Acts of violent misogyny from individual marines cause ingroup fighting that challenges their personal conceptions of what it means to “be a man” despite their adherence to traditional norms of American masculinity. The narrative of the musical thus translates Vietnam War era masculinity to modern audiences and utilizes the stage as a space for exploration of male gendered performance in musical theater. Using a broad range of methodologies to examine the lyrics\, musical score\, narrative\, staging\, costuming\, critical reviews\, and interviews\, Zane Larson will construct the varied ways that masculinity is performed in this musical. He will argue that the presentation of the marines as a socially dominant whole is challenged by individual marines’ performances of masculinities that are not in accordance with masculinity norms. Furthermore\, Larson will demonstrate how those who occupy the status of a non-socially dominant masculinity experience gender panic resulting in violent action by means of misogyny and homophobia. This violence occurs as those situated outside of the normative boundaries of masculinity attempt to reconstruct perceptions of their masculinity to fit societal expectations of American military service members in both Vietnam and contemporary eras. \nZane Larson is a PhD candidate in Musicology at the University of Iowa. He received his Bachelor’s in vocal performance with an education minor from Luther College ’19\, and a Master’s in Music Theory from Florida State University. Zane’s primary research areas are musical theater\, pop music\, film music\, and gender and sexuality studies. Zane has presented his research on musicals at CUNY’s Graduate Students in Music Conference\, on Hyperpop at Harvard’s Graduate Music Forum\, and on Leonard Bernstein at the National American Musicological Society meeting in Denver in 2023. Zane’s current publications include work on Women’s Clubs in Iowa and the musical A Strange Loop\, which was nominated for the Society for Music Theory’s Public Facing Scholarship Award in 2024 and the American Musicological Society’s Philip Brett Award in 2025.

DESCRIPTION:The Luther College Piano Quartet will perform with violinist Dawn Wohn at 4:00 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall. \nPraised as having “a joyful sense of freedom\, and a pure\, unencumbered tone” by BBC Music Magazine\, violinist Dawn Dongeun Wohn has performed in concert halls across five continents including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. She has appeared as a soloist for live-broadcast performances with orchestras such as the Korean Broadcasting Symphony and the Aspen Conducting Orchestra\, The New York Sinfonietta\, and Japan’s Telemann Ensemble. In addition\, she has performed recitals across the world including Carnegie Weill Hall\, Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center\, Merkin Hall\, and Jordan Hall. \nHer debut solo album Perspectives\, featuring works by female composers was featured by the New York Times\, Spotify and Apple Music and was chosen as one of WQXR’s best albums of the year. Her recent release\, Unbounded by Delos Music explores music by American women. Both albums have been featured on radio programs all over the world and have been noted for its “elegant and impassioned playing” (Classical Magazine)\, “warm\, crystal-clear tone” (Whole note Magazine)\, “stunning and panache” (IAWN) and “committed\, caring and lovely playing” (Fanfare). \nAs a musician with a wide range of styles and interests\, Dawn often performs with new music ensembles and as guest concertmaster for orchestras in venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall to Radio City Music Hall. Recent activities include a new commission by Jungsun Kang\, performances of Mark Phillip’s Violin Power for violin and interactive electronics\, and international tours with DJ Kid Koala and the Afiara Quartet as part of an interdisciplinary live show “Nufonia Must Fall”. As an active chamber musician\, Dawn has been invited to perform at festivals such as International Musician’s Seminar Prussia Cove in England\, The Banff Centre\, Music@Menlo\, and Aspen Music Festival. Notable collaborations include members of the Emerson\, Miami and Tokyo String Quartets\, as well as Colin Carr\, Jason Vieaux and Roberto Plano. \nDawn began her violin studies at age 4 and trained at The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division as a full scholarship student of the renowned pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. Further studies include an undergraduate degree from The Juilliard School\, a Master of Music and Artist Diploma from Yale University\, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University where she studied with Philip Setzer of the Emerson Quartet\, Soovin Kim and Gilbert Kalish. \nCommitted to teaching the next generation of violinists\, she is currently on faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Mead Witter School of Music and teaches at Rocky Ridge Music Festival during the summers. Previously\, she held the position of Associate Professor of Violin at Ohio University’s School of Music as well as Associate Concertmaster of Harrisburg Symphony. As a guest artist she has presented and performed recitals at over 50 schools such as Oberlin\, New England Conservatory\, NYU\, Ithaca College\, Bowling Green State University and Kansas University. She has also been on faculty of festivals such as the Académie Anglicorde in France\, International Music Festival of the Adriatic in Italy\, and Festival de Febrero in Mexico. \nDawn performs on a 1732 Nicolo Gagliano violin and enjoys reading or spending time outdoors with her husband Jay\, son Jasper and dog Wolfie (named after Mozart) when she is not performing or teaching. DESCRIPTION:8:00 – 8:30 p.m. Michael Van Meter\, “Rocks in My Life” \nThis presentation will explain the compositional process behind my song “Rocks in My Life\,” which I will officially release at commencement on my upcoming album\, Rocks and Words. I will discuss my creative process\, the sound equipment and techniques that I used\, and the influence of samba on my work. The presentation will include a walkthrough of my digital audio workstation\, as well as demonstrations of how to play Brazilian percussion instruments. \n  \n8:30 – 9:00 p.m. Sophie Klein\, “Enrique Granados’ Goyescas: How Madrid’s Eighteenth-Century Majismo Became A Narrative Piano Suite” \nThis presentation will examine Enrique Granados’(1867-1916) synthesis of some of the artworks of Francisco de Goya (1746-1828)\, as well as majismo in the piano suite Goyescas. Majismo was a culture present in the lower classes in eighteenth-century Madrid\, featuring performative courtships between men (majos) and women (majas). This cultural phenomenon has been subject to romanticization due to the gallant and underhanded nature of majismo relationships. I will analyze Granados’ constructed majismo narrative through Spanish musical traits\, leitmotifs\, and careful musical illustrations. I will demonstrate this narrative by playing recordings of various musical examples from the suite. \nThis event is free. Music majors and music minors are eligible for 1 music event attendance for attending this event.

Based on Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin\, this production brings a poignant narrative to the stage. \nPairing with this tragedy is Gian Carlo Menotti’s comic opera\, The Old Maid and the Thief. This opera buffa offers a comedic narrative that invites the audience to form their own conclusions about morality\, as each character’s perspective remains open to interpretation.” \nIn the weeks leading up to the performance\, tickets will be available at tickets.luther.edu.
