SUMMARY:Spring Opera: The Miller’s Daughter and The Old Maid and the Thief
DESCRIPTION:Luther College Opera Theater is proud to present a double bill featuring two distinct English-language works. \nThe program includes the tragic opera The Miller’s Daughter\, composed by Jodi Goble with a libretto by Victoria Erickson. Based on Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin\, this production brings a poignant narrative to the stage. \nPairing with this tragedy is Gian Carlo Menotti’s comic opera\, The Old Maid and the Thief. This opera buffa offers a comedic narrative that invites the audience to form their own conclusions about morality\, as each character’s perspective remains open to interpretation.” \nIn the weeks leading up to the performance\, tickets will be available at tickets.luther.edu.

SUMMARY:AAPI Month Speaker - Mai Na Lee: “Subverting the Blood Sacrifice Narrative: How the Hmong Arrived in the Midwest and Became Targets of ICE Arrest and Deportation”
DESCRIPTION:The Hmong began arriving in large numbers into the Midwestern states in 1976 as refugees of the first and second Indochina Wars. For decades\, the first generation of Hmong elders awaited the return to their mountainous homes in Laos. Because they saw themselves as sojourners and not permanent immigrants\, many never prepared for obtaining citizenship for themselves or their children. This refusal for permanent resettlement complicated their lives and the lives of their children at multiple junctures of history. This talk provides the background for U.S. empire activities in Southeast Asia that displaced the Hmong into the United States with emphasis on their resettlement in the Midwest. It will also set the grounds for examining why the Hmong have become targets of the Trump administration’s ICE Arrest and Deportation efforts in Minnesota during the last year.

SUMMARY:Women's History Month Keynote: Shelley Buffalo: Rematriation and Indigenous Futurism
DESCRIPTION:Shelley Buffalo\, Decolonial Pathfinder\, is a food sovereignty\, rematriation and restorative justice advocate. Through collaborative partnerships and her consultancy\, Water Panther\, Shelley mindfully directs her labor to penetrate and transcend the colonial mindset. Through creative and compassionate solutions\, Shelley seeks a path forward to a livable\, equitable and biodiverse future on Earth. The story of Grandmother Spider who weaves the pattern of life on Earth teaches us the creative potential of making the pattern more beautiful than before as we hone our skills and vision informed by humility\, value and respect for life on Earth. Shelley calls on her ancestors to help her weave with Grandmother’s hands; with wisdom\, love and care for all of creation. \nShelley believes that the undoing of colonial structures is necessary for reweaving something more beautiful as is Grandmother Spider’s lesson for human life on earth. Each time we reweave the fabric of society\, we have the opportunity to make it more beautiful. \n

SUMMARY:Partisan Politics and Public Health: Lessons Learned with Vaccine Developer Dr. Thomas Verstraeten
DESCRIPTION:At a time in the United States when the field of public health is becoming increasingly more partisan\, what can we learn from other countries around the world to stabilize public trust in public health officials? Luther student\, Maci Doty ‘26\, is joined by Dr. Thomas Verstraeten to discuss the politics of public health\, specifically vaccinations\, in Europe. Dr. Verstraeten is the founder of a Belgium-based infectious disease and vaccine research company\, P95. Utilizing hubs around the world\, P95 works alongside the World Health Organization\, Pfizer\, and other global organizations to develop and research vaccines. Dr. Verstraeten brings a unique perspective to the conversation; straddling both private and public sectors in public health\, he is well-positioned to share insights that may benefit partisan states like the United States. Dr. Verstraeten and Ms. Doty will discuss political debates and topics that surround vaccination in Europe as compared to the US\, and the role of governments in shaping public opinion. \nThis discussion will take place over Zoom with a viewing in Hovde Lounge.

SUMMARY:"Stories\, Systems\, Survival" Earth Day Panel
DESCRIPTION:How do we care for ourselves\, and each other\, in the face of climate change? This panel featuring Tony\, Tyler\, and Ploy explores the connections between mental health\, community care\, and climate justice in a time of overlapping global crises. \nJoin us for a conversation on collective care practices\, the power of storytelling to connect lived experiences with environmental realities\, and how systems like inequality and colonialism shape both the climate crisis and its emotional impacts. Panelists will also share practical tools to help students stay grounded\, resilient\, and engaged. \n\nTony Perez Soto – Tony is an Indigenous climate activist and scholar whose work centers decolonization\, migration\, and Indigenous sovereignty; his perspective will ground Luther’s exploration of spirituality and climate justice through lived cultural and ancestral knowledge.\nTyler Massias – Tyler is an environmental justice activist/organizer and Earth Guardians’ Speakers Bureau Director whose work in food sovereignty and regenerative agriculture reflects a spiritually rooted approach to community resilience. He also brings a scientific and policy-oriented perspective.\nPloy Kongkapetch – Ploy is a multicultural therapist and founder of Heartwork Psychotherapy\, where she supports activists and changemakers in navigating the emotional impact of climate and social justice work. Her approach centers grief\, anger\, hope\, and exhaustion as essential parts of caring deeply\, helping individuals build more sustainable relationships with themselves and the movements they are part of.

SUMMARY:"Embodying Indigenous Spirituality" Sihler Lecture
DESCRIPTION:As we care for Mother Earth and vice versa\, the feminine energy guides us to stewardship and spirituality with all our non-human relatives; embracing this energy will unlock for us a new way to engage with climate action decisively. This collaboration will invite students\, faculty\, and community members to explore how belief systems/cosmology\, cultural traditions\, and personal values shape our collective response to the climate crisis. \nWe will also highlight the vital role of Indigenous sovereignty\, examining how Indigenous spiritual worldviews\, land-based practices\, music as a sacred conduit between worlds\, and movements for self-determination offer essential guidance for climate justice and ecological restoration. By bringing together scientific understanding with deep moral\, cultural\, and spiritual reflections\, the event aims to cultivate a sense of shared responsibility and interconnection during a moment of global social\, ecological\, and spiritual degradation. \nThis keynote is featuring one of our nationally recognized Earth Guardians Speakers\, Tony Perez Soto\, whose activism\, lived experience\, and spiritual grounding illuminate new pathways for climate engagement.

SUMMARY:Roslien Lecture: Dr. Michael Osterholm\, "Public Health in Crisis: What This Means to You"
DESCRIPTION:A Fireside Chat with Dr. Michael Osterholm\nModerated by Dr. Mark Larson\nThis event is co-sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio. \nThe national public health response to the COVID pandemic has been heavily criticized for the lack of a clearly defined strategy\, resulting in a lack of trust in public health by the general public. Now the Trump Administration’s national response to infectious diseases\, and vaccines in particular\, is no longer based on scientific evidence\, but rather ideology. SUMMARY:Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture: “Belonging Across Borders: Understanding Transracial and Transnationally Adopted College Students"
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Boike\, assistant dean and director of the Center for Intercultural Engagement and Support\, will present the lecture\, “Belonging Across Borders: Understanding Transracial and Transnationally Adopted College Students.” In American higher education\, students are understood through their identities and experiences. Transracial and transnationally adopted college students are an understudied population\, often due to a lack of exposure or understanding of their specific identities. Understanding who adoptees are and how they navigate both their birth culture and American culture can have an impact on their sense of belonging and retention in college while providing a lens for Student Affairs professionals to support their intersectional identities and experiences.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED Women's History Month Keynote: Shelley Buffalo: Rematriation and Indigenous Futurism
DESCRIPTION:This event has been rescheduled for Monday\, April 27 at 4:30 p.m. \nShelley Buffalo\, Decolonial Pathfinder\, is a food sovereignty\, rematriation and restorative justice advocate. \n

SUMMARY:Women’s History Month Speaker: Dr. Natalie Fixmer-Oraiz
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to attend the Women’s History Month keynote lecture\, “Feminist Futures: WTF (Women/Trans/Femme) Solidarity in the Movement for Reproductive Justice.” Professor Natalie Fixmer-Oraiz (University of Iowa) draws on decades of experience in academic research and community organizing to explore trans liberation as essential to reproductive justice. In a moment when politicians and pundits attempt to pit cisgender women’s rights against those of trans and queer people\, Professor Fixmer-Oraiz offers lessons from reproductive politics past to envision a future rooted in deep solidarity. She will draw partly from her recent co-authored book\, Doing Gender Justice: Queering Reproduction\, Kin\, and Care\, which explores how reproductive justice advocates\, birth workers\, and trans and gender nonconforming people craft spaces of radical affirmation and dignity for queer family formation. Sponsored by CIES.

SUMMARY:Book presentation by Andrew Szarejko: "American Conquest: The Northwestern Indian War and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy"
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Szarejko\, assistant professor of political science at Wartburg College\, will offer this presentation on his book\, American Conquest: The Northwestern Indian War and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy (Stanford University Press). \nThe first war fought by the United States as an independent nation was not against Britain\, but against Native nations of the Ohio River Valley in the Northwest Indian War (1790–1795). In this innovative study\, Szarejko shows how this early conflict shaped enduring patterns of American expansion\, military strategy\, and foreign policy—challenging the myth of U.S. isolationism and placing Indigenous politics at the center of international relations.

SUMMARY:"Red Earth Nation" Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of truth and reconciliation\, Decorah UU is hosting book discussions of “Red Earth Nation” by Eric Zimmer and Meskwaki Historians\, Johnathan L. Buffalo and Dawn Suzanne Wanatee Buffalo.  \n\nDiscussion of the book will be held on Tuesdays February 10\, 17\, and 24 from 6:30 – 7:30p at the Mott meeting room in the Luther College Student Union.\n\n\nIf you or a friend have not already signed up\, and you wish to join the discussions of “Red Earth Nation” reply to decorahuu.contact@gmail.com\n\n“In 1857\, the Meskwaki Nation purchased an eighty-acre parcel of land along the Iowa River. With that modest plot secured as a place to rest and rebuild after centuries of devastation and dispossession\, the Meskwaki\, or “Red Earth People\,” began to reclaim their homeland—an effort that Native nations continue to this day in what has recently come to be called the #Landback movement. Red Earth Nation explores the long history of #Landback through the Meskwaki Nation’s story\, one of the oldest and clearest examples of direct-purchase Indigenous land reclamation in American history.” – synopsis from the website of “Red Earth Nation”\, University of Oklahoma Press \nThis book was recommended by Shelley Buffalo from the Meskwaki Settlement.

SUMMARY:Guest Talk: Building Community and Spotting Chameleons - Experiencing rural Madagascar as a Peace Corps Volunteer
DESCRIPTION:Join Returned Peace Corps Volunteer and Luther alum Becca Buse ’19 for a talk encapsulating their experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Madagascar 2023-25\, followed by lunch in the Luther Cafeteria. \nMadagascar is the fourth largest island on earth and extremely biodiverse—famous for lemurs\, chameleons\, and baobab trees. Madagascar also faces poverty\, lack of infrastructure (11% paved roads)\, and inconsistent access to water and electricity. As a Peace Corps Volunteer\, Becca focused on three areas of community building: training local farmers to increase sustainable agriculture practices\, co-teaching mothers to improve nutrition\, and educating community members to protect the local Tapia forest environment. While all Peace Corps experiences abroad are unique to each volunteer\, Becca will also have time to answer general questions about applying to the peace corps\, different types of service\, and living abroad. Additionally\, Becca has been selected as a Rotary Peace Fellow and will begin a master’s in Peace and Conflict Studies (MPaC) at the University of Queensland\, Brisbane Australia in February of 2026. At the end of the talk you will get a chance to spot a chameleon. It isn’t as easy as you’d think! \n*People joining for lunch will need to pay for their own cafeteria entry.

SUMMARY:Senior Presentation: Crossing Borders: From Timor-Leste to a Post-Brexit World
DESCRIPTION:This presentation follows a personal and global journey from Timor-Leste to the United Kingdom\, exploring how one of the world’s youngest nations connects to one of Europe’s most defining political moments — Brexit. Through stories\, observations\, and research on immigration\, economics\, and identity\, Jose Eliano reflects on how Brexit affected Timorese communities living and working in the UK through Portuguese citizenship. The talk invites audiences to consider how global decisions can shape opportunities\, belonging\, and the movement of people — even in places as distant as Timor-Leste. \nOpen to students\, faculty\, and community members interested in global affairs\, migration\, and the experiences of Timorese people abroad. Sponsored by the International Studies Department.
