SUMMARY:"Where Does $1 Trillion Go?" Day of Action at Luther College
DESCRIPTION:Luther College students are invited to join the Up to Us – Luther College team for an interactive civic engagement event focused on understanding the U.S. national debt and its implications for our generation’s economic future. The event\, titled “Where Does $1 Trillion Go?”\, will feature four interactive sessions—Federal Budget 101\, Generational Debt\, Interest vs. Investment\, and Student Voices—that help participants explore how national fiscal choices impact higher education\, job opportunities\, and long-term financial stability. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to take part in a Congressional postcard-writing activity\, engage in short budget simulations\, and sign the Up to Us pledge to make their voices heard on fiscal responsibility. Free pizza\, snacks\, and raffle prizes will be available to attendees who complete all sessions or share their experiences on social media using #UpToUs and @UpToUs_LutherCollege. \nThis event is part of the national Up to Us campaign\, a nonpartisan initiative that empowers students across the country to build awareness and dialogue around the national debt and generational equity. Open exclusively to Luther College students\, faculty\, and community members. \nregistration is encouraged

SUMMARY:Price Lecture: Leadership Institute for Indigenous and Afro-descendent Women from Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona hosts two highly select groups of Indigenous and Afro-descendent women between the ages of 18 and 24 from different Latin American countries for the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI)\, funded by the US Department of State. In this talk\, the director of the Institute\, Dr. Marcela Vásquez-León\, will reflect on her decade long experience mentoring these students. She will focus on how the program is a transformational site in which the participants envision and build a sense of intersectional feminism along the lines of what feminist Lelia Gonzalez has called amefricanidade (amefricanity)\, creating networks of solidarity that go beyond the program. At the same time\, challenges and contradictions arise given the ways in which the institute itself is situated in the larger geopolitics of U.S./Latin American relations.

SUMMARY:Senior Presentation: Crossing Borders: From Timor-Leste to a Post-Brexit World
DESCRIPTION:This presentation follows a personal and global journey from Timor-Leste to the United Kingdom\, exploring how one of the world’s youngest nations connects to one of Europe’s most defining political moments — Brexit. Through stories\, observations\, and research on immigration\, economics\, and identity\, Jose Eliano reflects on how Brexit affected Timorese communities living and working in the UK through Portuguese citizenship. The talk invites audiences to consider how global decisions can shape opportunities\, belonging\, and the movement of people — even in places as distant as Timor-Leste. \nOpen to students\, faculty\, and community members interested in global affairs\, migration\, and the experiences of Timorese people abroad. Sponsored by the International Studies Department.

DESCRIPTION:During the men’s basketball game on Tue.\, Nov. 18\, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is hosting a Food Drive and Paper Airplane Contest to benefit the Postville Food Pantry This initiative is a wonderful opportunity to support our surrounding communities. \nGuests who bring a canned food item will receive a complimentary popcorn as a thank-you for their contribution. \nDuring halftime\, attendees are invited to participate in a Paper Airplane Contest. Participants will construct their own paper airplanes and\, upon signal\, launch them from the stands toward a target on the court. The airplane landing closest to the target will receive a prize. Pieces of paper will be $1.00 each with all proceeds going to the Postville Food Pantry. \nJoin us for an evening of community engagement and entertainment while supporting a meaningful cause.
