SUMMARY:Jeff VanderMeer: One Evening in Area X
DESCRIPTION:Please join Jeff VanderMeer for One Evening in Area X when he visits Luther College on April 22nd. Area X is an unsettling concept from VanderMeer’s Southern Reach series–a zone that one enters through obscure borders and inside of which relationships to time\, space\, self\, and ecosystem melt and morph. VanderMeer will discuss the social roles of fiction in uncertain times\, the critical need for biology and ecological thinking in this moment\, the ethics of rewilding yards\, the ecstasies of birding\, and more. The event format features VanderMeer in conversation with Andy Hageman\, Professor of English and Director of The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement at Luther College\, an audience Q&A\, and a book sale & signing. \nJeff VanderMeer is the author of Hummingbird Salamander; the Borne novels (Borne\, The Strange Bird\, and Dead Astronauts); and the Southern Reach series (Annihilation\, Authority\, Acceptance\, and most recently\, Absolution)\, the first volume of which won the Nebula Award and Shirley Jackson Award and was adapted into a movie by Paramount. He has spoken at MIT\, Columbia\, Yale\, and Vanderbilt\, and gave the 2024 John Hersey Memorial Address at the Key West Literary Seminar. Environmental nonfiction by VanderMeer has appeared in Time\, The Nation\, Current Affairs\, and Esquire\, among others. VanderMeer founded the Sunshine State Biodiversity Group nonprofit in 2023. \nThis event is free\, but a ticket is required. \nGet your ticket \nWatch via live stream \n

SUMMARY:Information Session for Social Life of Art (Norway/Iceland) Study Away Course
DESCRIPTION:Meet your faculty\, hear more about the itinerary and the course goals! \nART/ANTH 339: Social Life of Art (Norway/Iceland)\nInstructors: Ben Moore (Art); Maryna Nading (Anthropology)\n[Fulfills GE and elective within Art and Anth majors/minors; Cost Est.: $5250-$5950] \nWe will study the social life of art in Norway and Iceland as it is produced and exchanged between people. We will probe the distinction between fine art and craft by tracing art’s social functions. For example\, we will visit national museums and galleries to think about how decisions are made about what to display and who gets acclaim. We will visit folk art museums and workshops to examine how art figures in nation building and nation branding. We will spend time outdoors to examine street art and how it compares to official narratives that come from museums and galleries. We will meet with curators\, artists\, and business owners to hear about their engagement in various aspects of art production and circulation\, for example how traditional art forms evolve with time\, how art can mobilize people around pursuit of social justice\, how making items by hand resists commoditization and exploitative economic practices. In short\, we will ask: what does art do? \nThe course is open to students of all majors and no prior experience with Art or Anthropology courses is required.

Not entirely. The full story lies in how we grow the crops and raise animals that make their way into our bodies. Biklé will draw on her most recent book\, “What Your Food Ate: How to Heal Our Land and Reclaim Our Health“\, co-authored with her husband David Montgomery. Recent and forgotten science reveal intimate connections between soil health and human health traveling along a pathway that winds through soil\, the bodies of crops\, livestock\, and microbiomes\, eventually reaching us. \nAbout Anne Biklé\nAnne Biklé is a science writer and public speaker drawing on her background in biology and\nenvironmental planning to explore humanity’s tangled relationship with nature through the lens of agriculture\, soil\, and food. She is particularly enthralled with the botanical world and its influence on humanity throughout history. With the help of mulches and microbes she has coaxed many a plant into rambunctious growth or nursed them back from the edge of death. \nBiklé is the co-author of two books\, What Your Food Ate and The Hidden Half of Nature. Both are collaborations with her husband geologist\, David Montgomery. Her writing has appeared in print and digital media including Nautilus\, Natural History\, and Best Health. Her regenerative gardening practices have been featured in independent and documentary films and interviews with her can be found on a range of podcasts and radio programs that focus on farming\, food\, and human health. \nContact for Anne\nweb: www.Dig2Grow.com || email: Dig2Grow@gmail.com \n8:30 pm: Soil\, Food\, and Health Conversation and Q&A with an award-winning panel of local/regional soil and human health care providers:\nWendy Johnson\, Organic and conventional farmer\, livestock grazier and entrepreneur. They help customers solve everyday questions\, like whether or not to peel farm-fresh carrots and how to keep salad greens crisp all week long.
