Luther and the University of Dubuque split the final two games of this three-game series this afternoon. The Spartans won game one by a final of 2-1 and Luther won game two 18-1.
In game one, the Spartans Jordan Nelson held the Norse in check, spreading seven hits and striking out eight in seven innings of work en route to the win.
Dubuque scored one run in both the first and sixth frames. Luther put its lone run on the board in the top of the eighth. Luke Plunkett started the inning with a double to center field. Three batters later with two outs, Joe McKibben drove a single up the middle that scored Plunkett.
Colin Coffey (2-2) went the distance on the mound for the Norse. Coffey allowed two earned runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out five.
In the nightcap, the Norse exploded for 18 runs on 17 hits. The Norse scored five runs in the third, one in the fourth, seven in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh. Twelve of the 18 runs were earned. Luther's 17 hits was the second highest single game total of the year. The Norse tallied 21 hits when they defeated No. 20 St. John's University 12-7 on March 23.
Six players produced multiple hits. Derek McCready and Jake Halverson had three, while Kelby Johnson, Plunkett, Owen Vander Linden and Bryce Hingst all had two. Plunkett drove in five runs and Halverson drove in three. Trent Athmann and Jake Vogt were next with two rbi each.
Kyle Bode (2-2) was credited with the win. Bode did not allow a run in five innings of work. He gave up one hit, walked two and struck out six.
This was the American Rivers Conference opening weekend for the Norse who are now 9-10 overall. Dubuque fell to 2-4 in the A-R-C, 8-6-1 overall.
Luther begins its home schedule on Tuesday, April 2 when it will host Wartburg College. This double header will begin at 1:00 p.m.
