For the seventh time in nine years Luther captured the championship of the Iowa Conference Tournament. The Norse defeated the top seed Kohawks of Coe College 4-0 and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III National Tournament.
Luther also became only the second team to win three consecutive tournament titles (2016, 2017, 2018). The other team to accomplish this was Wartburg College (2006, 2007, 2008).
Luther scored what proved to be the game winning run in the three-run top of the second. Natalie Stockman hit a two-run single and two batters later Anna Strien produced a one-run single. Designated player Paige Timmerman drove in the final run in the sixth.
Samantha Bratland went the distance in the circle. Bratland allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three. She also got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third. The 2017 NFCA All-American finished the day pitching 13 innings, allowed 10 hits, walked five and struck out six, while facing a total of 51 batters.
The win gives Luther a record of 35-8. Coe is now 26-12.
Luther will find out where they will be playing in the NCAA III National Tournament Monday, May 7th, at 1:00 PM ET on NCAA.com.
