Luther and Hamline University met at Independence High School for a non-conference double header this afternoon. The Pipers swept the Norse 3-2 (8) and 7-2.
Luther manages just nine hits in the twin bill, four in game one and five in game two. Both head coaches used the afternoon to get their pitching staff some work as the Norse used 12 different pitchers and the Pipers used eight.
Schedule as two seven-inning games, the Pipers scored two runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra frames and then scored the game winner in the eighth.
Luther took a 1-0 lead in the third when Jared Swanson lead-off with a single and advanced to third thanks to a passed ball and wild pitch and then scored on a second passed ball.
Joe McKibben gave the Norse a 2-0 advantage in the fourth thanks to an RBI single that scored Mitch Bruggers who drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a pass ball.
Bryce Hingst was the lone Norse to produce multiple hits going 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, Hamline tallied seven runs on 12 hits, while Luther scored twice on four hits. Cole Jensen and Jake Halverson were both credited with an RBI.
Luther fell to 17-9 overall, while Hamline improved to 8-10.
Luther is scheduled to host Loras College this weekend for a three-game series. Friday's (1x9) is slated for a 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday the twin bill (2x9) will begin at Noon.
