No. 9 Luther traveled to the University of Dubuque this afternoon and returned home with a split. The Norse won game one 8-0 in six innings and were defeated in game two by a final of 2-1.
In game one, the Norse scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings and added two more in the sixth. Anna Strien led an offensive attack that produced 12 hits. Strien was 3-for-4 with four RBI that included a two-run home run in the third.
Multiple hits were also recorded by Ashley Burrows (2-for-4), Bailey Victoria (2-for-3) and Elsa Skeie (2-for-3) who was getting her second start of the year. Burrows was credited with two RBI and Natalie Stockman was credited with one.
Samantha Bratland improved to 14-2 in the circle. Bratland allowed two hits, walked two and struck out nine in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, Dubuque got four of its six hits in the bottom of the sixth that led to the game winning run with the score tied 1-1. Luther also had six hits with three coming in the third frame, the only inning the Norse put a run on the score board. Strien and Burrows were both 2-for-3 and Strien drove in the run in the third, her fifth of the day.
Courtney Cooper suffered her first loss of the season and is now 9-1. Cooper walked one and struck out six in six innings of work.
The split gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 3-1, 25-3 overall. Dubuque improved to 2-4 in the IIAC, 6-22 overall.
Luther returns to action on Sunday, April 22 when it will host Nebraska Wesleyan University. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
