No. 5 Luther wrapped up its non-conference schedule today at the RCTC Dome, Rochester, Minn., splitting a double header with UW-River Falls.
In game one the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Facing their last at-bats, Luther tie the score at 6-6, thanks to a two-out triple to right field by Bailey Hocker that scored Kaeli Kovarik. Kovark was pinch running for Addy Pender who lead-off with a walk. The Falcons answered in the bottom of seventh when Aiyana Ledwein hit a bases loaded single to end the ball game at 7-6. The loss snapped Luther's 17-game win streak dating back to March 4.
Both teams hit well. Luther tallied 11 hits and UW-River Falls had 10. Ashley Burrows, Anna Strien, Megan Bonnett and Bailey Hocker all had two hits for the Norse. Strien and Pender were both credited with two RBI. Pender hit a two-run home run over the left field fence in the fourth. Five batters later, Strien hit a double to left-center field, that added two more runs in the frame.
Samantha Bratland (12-2) was credited with the loss. Bratland allowed seven runs, walked eight and struck out nine.
In the nightcap, the Norse jumped on the Falcons early scoring two in the first and added one in the second. The Falcons two runs came on a two-run shot to center field by Maddie Studnicka in the fourth.
Courtney Cooper (8-0) went the distance on the rubber. Cooper allowed six hits, walked three and struck out three.
The first three batters in the line-up, Burrows, Strien and Natalie Stockman combined for seven of Luther's nine hits. Burrows was 2-for-4, Strien was 2-for-3 and Stockman was 3-for-4.
The split gives Luther an overall record of 22-2. UW-River Falls is now 15-5.
Luther will begin Iowa Conference action at Buena Vista University on Wednesday, April 11. First pitch of the double header will take place at 3:00 p.m.
