Luther's season came to an end this afternoon at the Pella Regional as the Norse lost to North Central (IL) in the championship game 6-2.
The Norse spotted the Cardinals four runs in the first two innings and then the game was halted for just under four hours due to heavy rain. When play resumed, the Norse bats came alive in the fourth as they scored two runs on five hits. North Central put two more on the board in the top of the sixth.
Kelsey Rose and Alise Miller.
The loss gives Luther an overall record of 32-8. It also ends the careers of Luther's two seniors, pitcher Becca Girvan and catcher Kayla Hatting. Hatting finished the year batting .330 with 15 RBI and yesterday was named third team all-Midwest Region for the first time. Girvan, a 2012 All-American and four-time all-Iowa Conference and all-Midwest Region honoree, completes her career with a record of 87-21 and over 800 strike outs.
"What a year!" stated Head Coach Renae Hartl. "I am so proud of this group and everything they have accomplished, on and off the field. Bringing in 13 newcomers into the program in the fall was a challenge for the veterans of the program because we have a pretty specific way of doing things around here. I was pleased, to say the least, at how the newcomers responded and how the returners lead the way. To go on a month-long win-streak in April is so difficult to do with our schedule and they capped it all off with three more huge wins to bring home the IIAC Tournament championship.
Our two seniors - Kayla Hatting and Becca Girvan - have propelled this program into one of the nation's best and we can't wait to see what they are going to do next as they enter the next stage of their lives."
