Luther gave No. 3 Wartburg a battled tonight in the Regents Center, but ultimately fell to the Knights 63-54. Wartburg led by as many as 12 points (43-31) with 2:05 left in the third quarter, when Luther put together a 13-2 run and pulled to within one (44-45) with 8:39 left in the game. Wartburg responded with 14-2 run of its own that proved to be the difference in the ball game en route to its biggest lead of the game (59-46) at the 4:27 mark.
Neither team shot the ball well as both defensive units held their opponents to low percentages. Wartburg connected on 38.6 percent (22-57) and Luther shot 34.4 percent (22-64). The Knights were 14-of-15 from the charity stripe, while Luther went 6-of-10. Wartburg held a slight 41-39 edge in rebounds.
Laura Hamilton and Madison Spence led the Norse attack with 11 and 10 points respectively. Sarah Holtz added eight off the bench, while Claire Marburger, Anna Edel and Sydney Rehnelt all chipped in seven.
The Knights were led by Miranda Murphy with 14 and Aryn Jones with 13. Morgan Neuendorf collected a game high 11 rebounds.
The loss dropped Luther into a two-way tie for second place in the Iowa Conference with Coe at 9-4. Wartburg improved to 13-0, 22-0 overall.
Luther travels to Central College this Saturday, Feb. 10. Tip-off will take place in Pella at 2:00 p.m.
