Luther fell to 0-2 in the Iowa Conference after dropping a hard fought 89-92 decision to Central this afternoon. It was a shoot out in Pella as both teams shot 50 percent or better from the field. The Dutch blistered the nets from behind the three-point line connecting on 15-of-29 and also made key free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. The Dutch were 17-of-22 from the charity stripe that included an 11-of-13 performance in the final 1:18 of the game.
The Norse produced their highest point total of the season connecting on 31-of-62 attempts that included eight treys. The Norse were also 19-of-24 from the free throw line.
Trailing 28-24 at halftime, Luther put together a 20-11 run and held a three-point advantage (48-45) with just under 14 minutes remaining. The eighth and final tie of the game was at 5:58 when Jake Martin knocked down a three pointer that leveled the score at 65-65.
Martin and Cody Kliethermes both produced career highs with 23 and 21 points respectively. Kliethermes was 4-of-5 from behind the arc and scored 10 of his 21 in the final 42 seconds of the ball game. Aaron Huber also tallied double digits with 12.
Central was led by the duo of Colby Taylor with 29 and Nile Eckermann with 28.
The loss drops Luther's overall record to 4-9. Central improves to 1-1 in the Iowa Conference, 8-5 overall.
Luther returns to league play on Wednesday, Jan. 14 when it will host University of Dubuque (1-1, 11-2). Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. This game will be video streamed.
