Gustavus Adolphus College hosted the 2019 ITA Midwest Regional Championships, Sept. 27-30. No team scores were kept.
Luther junior Cole Schneider and sophomore Nyathi Motlojoa advanced to the championship match where they were defeated by Michael O'Neil and Daniel Fouchier of Gustavus in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 10-2). Schneider and Motlojoa were the No. 5 seeds of the bracket and the Gustavus duo were seeded No. 3.
Schneider and Motlojoa played four matches prior to the title match, defeating Nolan Rademacher and Logan Snyder of Concordia (Wis.) (8-1) in the second round; they defeated No. 9 seeds Zach Janssen and Grant Mauthe of UW-Eau Claire (8-4) in the round of 16; defeated the No. 1 seeds Yassine Derbani and Nick Aney of Gustavus (8-7) in the quarterfinals; and defeated the No. 4 seeds Alex Gray and Zach Wood of UW-Whitewater in the semifinals (8-5).
With the runner-up finish, Schneider and Motlojoa earned a trip to the ITA Cup that will be hosted by Berry College in Rome, Georgia at the Rome Tennis Center, Oct. 17-20.
The nine ITA Regional doubles and singles champions, plus finalist for both singles and doubles from seven regionals - Central, Midwest, Northeast, New England, South, Southeast and West - earned automatic bids to the ITA Cup.
The champions of the ITA Cup doubles and singles brackets, will advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place at the Newport Beach Tennis Club & The Tennis Club at Newport Beach Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif., Nov. 6-10.
This is the second time in 10 years that a Luther's doubles team has advanced to the ITA Cup. Scott Sundstrom '12 and Utsab Rijal '10 won the doubles championship of the Midwest Regional in 2009.
